Pharmaceutical chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry and pharmacology and various other biological specialties, where they are involved with the design, chemical synthesis and development of pharmaceutical agents. This course lays a foundation in the fundamentals of organic chemistry suitable for the study of medicinal and pharmaceutical sciences. Various organic synthesis techniques are also introduced.
Course Aim:
To introduce to the students the fundamental principles of organic and laboratory procedures necessary to synthesise organic compounds and other related substances.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the student should be able to:
Describe the structure and nomenclature of various organic compounds/substances
Describe organic compounds and their functional groups
Elucidate various types of organic reactions
Conduct quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of organic compounds
Apply various reactions of organic functional groups to drug synthesis approaches
Evaluate organic compounds in relation to medicinal substances
Course Competencies:
At successful completion of the course, the student:
Describes the structure and nomenclature of various organic compounds/substances
Describes organic compounds and their functional groups
Elucidates various types of organic reactions
